Landair Surveys was engaged by heritage consultancy firm Lovell Chen to record existing conditions of building façades and roof profiles at the prestigious Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School.
Founded in 1893, Melbourne Girls’ Grammar has been a cornerstone of girls’ education in Victoria, cultivating generations of students who’ve gone on to excel in fields ranging from medicine and the sciences to elite sport and the arts. Nestled beside the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Merton Hall campus in South Yarra is home to several heritage-listed buildings set across six acres of landscaped grounds.
Initial engagement began in late 2023, with Landair conducting a series of RPA (drone) flyovers to capture the rooftop conditions of Merton Hall’s heritage buildings. High-resolution aerial imagery and detailed roof plans were produced to assist Lovell Chen’s conservation work.
In 2025, the project scope was expanded to include a comprehensive 3D laser scanning survey of the campus’s main heritage façades. Over the course of 20 hours, Landair’s scanning team completed 80 individual setups to record the vertical surfaces of each building in high detail. Working methodically around the active school site, the team ensured minimal disruption while capturing the intricate architectural features.
Once scanning was complete, the ground-based data was integrated with the earlier RPA roof capture to form a unified, accurate dataset. This merged point cloud was then used by Landair’s drafting team to produce 2D façade elevation plans to complement the previously supplied roof drawings.
